MISSING dogs are not an unusual occurrence on the Mornington Peninsula, as any look at local social media attests to. But some pull at the heart strings more than others.
The case of lost dog Fifi has another layer of sadness, with the pooches’ owner Nicole Kenyon finding out about the dog’s escape on 14 June, when she was stuck in hospital for several weeks and helplessly unable to do anything. Kenyon had placed her beloved Maltese x Shitzu dog in the hands of a dog minder, but as often happens when dogs miss their human, the 11-year-old pet escaped an open door of a house in Alathea Court, Rye, and has not been sighted since.
“It’s really unusual, she’s not that kind of dog, but nobody has seen her, nobody has heard her. I can’t understand it,” Kenyon said. “She was staying at a house nine kilometres from her home in Point Nepean Road, Capel Sound, so maybe she tried to get back, but it’s weird that she hadn’t been sighted at all. I have alerted the pound, the shelters, still nothing.”
Kenyon said she was “hopeful” that her dog would turn up or be handed back by someone who may have found her.
Fifi is microchipped but was not wearing a collar when she disappeared. “She is a lovely dog, I can imagine someone maybe finding her and wanting to look after her because she is so sweet,” Kenyon said.
“But this is heart breaking for me, I have had her since she was small and she is my life. I have no children and I miss her so badly.” Kenyon said her only hope was she had been picked up by someone that was looking after her well, unaware she already had a loving home. “It’s so awful to think she may be scared, so I keep myself going my thinking that whoever has her is looking after her and she will be okay.”
