PRIMARY schools have gathered for a block of fun in an inaugural Lego competition hosted by the Lions Club of Mornington. Teams of grade 4-5 students from Mornington Park Primary School, Moorooduc Primary School, and Mt Martha Primary School put their skills to the test after being set a challenge to build the sturdiest Lego road bridge within 90 minutes.
The event, held at Mornington Park Primary School hall on 15 November, was part of a Perpetual Lego Bridge Building competition developed by Lions members Graham Read and Denise Tsotras as part of their community support plans. “The idea was to create a non–physical and creative challenge for children to build a Lego road bridge within 90 minutes with a design of 25cm wide by 25cm high that would support a 500g weight placed on the top surface,” Read said.
Through a generous grant from Mt Martha Bendigo Bank, the Lions Club bought special Lego kits for each of the schools one week prior to the event to allow the students to practice. The pieces then had to be disassembled and replaced in the Lego box on the competition day.
Mount Martha Primary School took out the honours with their creative build being voted the most skilful by Lions Club secretary John Hannah, who acted as a technical judge with Tsotras judging aesthetics. The school was presented with an inscribed Perpetual Winners Trophy and a Lego building kit. “It was enjoyable for everyone present to see the creativity, enthusiasm and thrill all the students gained from taking part in the competition,” Read said.
The Lions Club of Mornington plans to run a similar Lego event next year.
