WORK has started to restore a 150-year-old Anglican church at Moorooduc. The church, built in 1863, had been left unused for nearly two decades before builder Stephen Foster decided it was worth saving. “There would only be a few buildings older than this one on the whole of the peninsula,” he said “It was sold off and locked up about 17 years ago, before that the local comunity would come down to look after it because of how important it was to them. Since then there’s been no maintenance, and it was just about ready to fall over. “It’s a…

CAPTAIN S. M. Bruce, M.C., Croix de Guerre, the selected Nationalist candidate for the Flinders seat, opened his campaign in the Dandenong town hall last night, and was given an enthusiastic reception by a large crowd of electors. The Candidate at the outset congratulated the electors of Flinders upon the great honor which had been conferred upon their late representative, Sir William Irvine, in being selected to fill the post of Chief Justice of Victoria. He proposed to support the present Government, because that Ministry was appointed by an overwhelming…

LEAVING Dandenong on Friday afternoon for Wonthaggi, Lieutenant M. H. Bolton, recruiting officer for Flinders, with Sergeants E. J. Coyle and R. Middleton had a most exciting experience in their new Ford recruiting car. After leaving Lang Lang the officers struck very bad roads, and decided to leave the main road and take a side track. It was dark and after looking over the road in daylight, it was seen that the car was but a few feet from a death trap in three very bad places. At one point the car had been was only a few inches from…

Reeves, had been admitted to Sutton Veny Military Hospital, England, on 23/1/18, suffering from gastritis. A FLEET of classic cars and motorcycles will travel across the Mornington Peninsula next month in support of children suffering from cancer. The first Ruby’s Ride ‘n’ Roll was held last year by Rachael Ford and Shane McGuinness, who started their own charity – Ruby-Rose Rainbow Fund – to raise money for children with cancer. “We lost our daughter to cancer two years ago, She had acute myeloid leukaemia, which is a very aggressive type of blood cancer. We’re fundraising for clinical trials, particularly for this type of leukaemia which one in three children will not survive,” Ms Ford said.…
TYABB market gardener Steve Taranto joined the heavyweight prize-winners at this year’s Red Hill Show with pumpkins weight 204 and 175 kilograms. The journey of the giant pumpkins is one that has taken around six months, with Mr Taranto having planted the pumpkins late last year. “We planted the pumpkins in October, this whole process takes a while,” he said. “The type of pumpkin is called an Atlantic giant, so it’s not your regular everyday pumpkin.” “I’ve been growing these giant pumpkins for the past eight years. The kids love it and they love the Red Hill Show. It started…
WE call special attention to an advertisement in another column of a public meeting, to consider the best means of perpetuating the memory of the late Sir John Madden amongst us. Since the Franskton man’s lamented death there has been singularly unanimous public expression of opinion, both in the Press and otherwise, of his many virtues as Lieutenant Governor and as Chief Justice of Victoria. Many tributes to his upright personal character have also appeared. It has been very fully recognised that in all his actions and in his many public utterances, he always was on the side of right,…
TWO miles out of Mornington, the body of an unknown man was found on Tuesday afternoon by Constable Kerr. Nearby were discovered two packets of strychnine, one of which had apparently been used. On the body was a ticket for a Bay street issued that morning, but there was nothing that would lead to identification. Deceased had a heavy bushy moustache; and was dressed in a grey sac suit, black woollen socks elastic “slip-on” boots and a cotton shirt and singlet. *** PROFOUND regret was expressed when the news of the death of Sir John Madden, Chief Justice of Victoria…
SOMETHING should be done at once by “our city fathers” with reference to the state of some of the drains in Frankston. The present state of affairs is disgraceful, and constitutes a serious menace to the health of the people of Frankston. In the right-of-way leading from Bay street into Thompson street, drainage from a number of houses flows, and although a drain of sorts has been made, there does not appear to be enough fall to enable the drainage to reach the drain in Thompson street. At present the drain is just a series of stagnant evil-smelling pools, and…

The restaurant and cellar door at Ten Minutes by Tractor will be closed until further notice. Sergeant Dennis Ramsay, of Mornington Police, said that the fire was “non-suspicious” and was suspected to have been caused by an electrical…

Fortunately, no workers inside the shop or pedestrians were injured. Brilliant Nails owner Mattieu Tran said the damage was extensive. “All of the front of the shop will need fixing. Cole was selected last year as the Australian representative in the international cooking competition, which will see him fly to China in May.
