To the Editor Sir, As a passenger who travelled by the 5.10pm train to Pearcedale via Baxter on Saturday, I wish to protest against the unseemly conduct of a number of men who travelled by this train. On the way from Frankston to Baxter the language used was shocking, the men also standing up and fighting one another. On arrival at Baxter the station master made an effort to seek the offenders, and I believe he took the name of one of them and put him into another part of the train. There was then a general melee in the…

His company was quite prepared to undertake this work as soon as they have an agreement with the Council for a period of years. It would be necessary to provide a separate current for the public lamps, and this would involve an outlay of at least. £100. He had already…

PERHAPS no community in the State has suffered greater inconvenience, and annoyance through inadequate lighting than the town of Frankston. The grievance is one of long standing and although repeated assurances have been given that cause for complaint would be remedied the users of electric light are still minus a satisfactory service. The experience at Capt Bruce’s meeting in the Frankston Hall last Tuesday night was not one calculated to reflect credit on the town. When the candidate was about half way through his speech the electric light suddenly failed and the hall was plunged into absolute darkness. Capt Bruce,…

THE original intention of the authorities was to include the line to Frankston among the first railways to be electrified. That was before the commencement of the war. During the last five years the scheme naturally hung fire, and no one wondered very much, believing that with the cessation of hostilities the long-delayed work would be proceeded with on the plans already formulated. It will come as a rude surprise to many to learn that it is now suggested to hang up the electrification of the Frankston line in favour of what is described as the outer suburban system. The…

LAST Saturday night there was a “bumper house” to give welcome to the Langwarrin soldier “boys” who recently returned from active service abroad. Seldom has holding capacity of the Recreation Hall been taxed to greater extent and certainly a more successful function has never been held within its walls. Added to the fine audience was a splendid spirit of joyous enthusiasm which seemed to influence all concerned. The Chairman (Mr W. Williams) was never in better form, while Cr Hill (Cranbourne Shire) and Cr Oates (Frankston and Hastings Shire) also delivered inspiring addresses which seemed to add to the buoyancy…

THE grand final of the Peninsula Association was played on Saturday at Somerville, Frankston winning the premierships after a strenuous contest was manifested, and a large crowd assembled to witness the match. Mornington, who at the beginning of the season were apparently invincible, had lost a lot of their dash, and the team lacked cohesion and system. Frankston, on the contrary, had improved on every day’s play, and on Saturday were undoubtedly the superior side. Moon, Gregory, and P. Darcy were out, and, Reddick, Tevendale, and E. McComb took their places. Except for these alterations, the team was the same…
IT is with deep regret that we announce the death of an old and respected pioneer, in the person of Mr. Joseph Haddock of Forest Lodge, Hastings at the age of 75 years. Deceased was a man of indomitable will, and always accomplished, however difficult, anything he undertook to carry out. He was born at Mount Prospect, in New South Wales, in 1844. Losing his parents during childhood, he had to battle for himself at an early age. After working in parts of New South Wales for a few years, he finally settled in Victoria, coming to Hastings forty-eight years…
Cr Oates said he noticed in the “Standard” that his action to prevent the Football Association charging 1s instead of 6d and 1d tax to football matches had been resented in some quarters. The Association, without notice, had increased the charge, and quite a lot of people resented their action, and although he had taken steps to have it blocked in the match between Frankston and Somerville, he had not been successful. He considered 6d a sufficient charge, and he moved the Association be informed that the maximum charge allowed would be 6d and 1d tax in forthcoming matches held…
THE aeroplane used to advertise the Peace Loan arrived in Frankston on Monday afternoon shortly after 3 o’clock. Nothing was known of the altered arrangements till Crs Oates and Mason motored to the rendezvous and announced that a message had just come through to the effect that the programme had been altered. Probably a reasonable explanation could be given…
