THE CFA is warning the community that the fire season still remains active after a burn pile reignited two months after last being lit, causing a fire requiring a water bomber to be called in.Fire crews were called to the incident on a Coolart Rd property just after 3pm on 10 March where they found a “column of smoke” and a fast-spreading fire. Crews brought the fire under control within 30 minutes and were on scene for over three hours. Firefighters contained a scrub fire that spread over two hectares in Cape Schanck, with a water-bombing helicopter called in to tackle the blaze on 6 February. The fire broke out near Long Point Rd about 5.50pm which saw 15 fire vehicles respond including units from Boneo, Rosebud, Main Ridge, Rye, Dromana, Moorooduc fire brigades and Fire Rescue Victoria pumper 95. COMMUNITY campaigner Fred Crump is calling on the state and local governments to do more to maintain roadside corridors to reduce the fire danger this summer. The call comes amid warnings from the Country Fire Authority about heightened risks this fire season, and calls on individuals to reduce vegetation loads around their properties.“The CFA are asking individuals to act to reduce the fire risk, but what about state and local governments?” said Crump. “The roadsides are an absolute disgrace. ABOUT 2000 CFA volunteers from the Mornington Peninsula have been battling the open cut coal fire at Morwell. As the fire enters its fourth week, buses are leaving Moorooduc twice daily taking members of Peninsula and Western Port CFA groups to 12-hour shifts at the fire, which is forcing the evacuation of people from smoke-affected parts of Morwell.
