LABOR candidate for Flinders, Sarah Race, has welcomed the federal government’s announcement that Women’s Community Shelters (WCS) will be funded to purchase three dwellings on the Mornington Peninsula.The funding is part of a $100 million commitment to 41 organisations around Australia for new crisis and transitional housing for women and children experiencing family and domestic violence. The organisation is in the process of establishing their first Victorian-based shelter on the peninsula. CRIME on the Mornington Peninsula has skyrocketed, increasing by more than 22 percent in the 2023/2024 financial year. The Crime Statistics Agency released its yearly figures last week. In the Mornington Peninsula municipality, total offences recorded increased by more than 22 percent to 11,644 in the year ending June 2024. Breaches of family violence orders were the most commonly recorded offences. The offence rate per 100,000 Mornington Peninsula residents was the worst recorded since 2020. ALMOST 2700 people were arrested for family violence offences between January and June this year across the Mornington Peninsula and south-east, in a major police blitz targeting some of Melbourne’s most impacted areas.More than 7500 charges were laid across the peninsula as well as Cardinia, Casey, Frankston and Greater Dandenong.The strong police focus to start the year included proactive checks on known offenders and victims to increase the chances of family violence being detected.
