A man has died in waters off Rye this afternoon, 31 August. It’s believed the man went into the water, just off Rye pier, around 2.45pm. The yet to be formally identified man was unable to be found for around 30 minutes until Air Wing located him in the water around 3.15pm. Divers retrieved the man and brought him back to shore where CPR was commenced but he died at the scene. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
WORK has started on the final stage of reconstructing Rye pier, with contractors renewing and upgrading the outer structure. The $3.95 million project began in 2022 with the renewal of the pier approach. The second and final phase includes a wider timber deck, solar lighting and safety handrails. The pier’s low landing will be extended to provide extra berthing space. The pier will be closed on weekdays and the first 300 metres opened on some weekends for walking, fishing and sightseeing. THREE people have been arrested after drugs and weapons were found at properties in Rye on Wednesday 31 May. Police from the Southern Metro Division 4 Divisional Response Unit, with assistance from Mornington Peninsula priority tasking unit and the drone unit, executed simultaneous search warrants at two Rye properties. During the searches, police located prohibited weapons, ammunition, methyl-amphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and various other drugs. HUNDREDS of volunteers are being marshalled in the final frenzied days of the campaign to build an adventure playground at Rye. More than two years in the planning, the nautical-themed playground will be built by the community over five days beginning Wednesday 24 October. Project coordinator Miranda Gillespie said there was a “last minute panic” to fill the rosters but the mood in Rye was “warm and fuzzy” and excited. “I can’t believe the time to build is actually here,” she said.
